The United States Environmental Protection Agency reported that in 2017, landfills received 26.8 million tons of plastic. This was 19.2 percent of all municipal solid waste landfilled. The Pennsylvania state environment group, Penn Environment, reported that everyday, Americans throw away more than 70 million polystyrene cups, 300 million single-use plastic bags, and nearly half a billion plastic straws.

Our Goal is for Villanova University to practice the principles of environmental sustainability and make reasonable efforts to conserve resources. Methods to conserve may include, among other things: waste reduction and the conscientious use of materials through compostable, eco friendly dinning ware. This will reduce Villanova's plastic usage and their carbon footprint, which will make Villanova a more sustainable campus.

If Villanova replaces plastic utensils with biodegradable, eco-friendly utensils, they will cut back on their trash production immensely and reduce landfill pollution. Biodegradable and compostable disposables utensils and plates will not harm the environment because they break down completely once discarded. This greener alternative to plastic, will make Villanova the leader in protecting our planet and be on the cutting-edge of sustainable dining halls.
