Gretchen Messalle started this petition to To the USD 341 Board Education:

We, the parents and students of the 8th grade class, would like to have the decision to NOT have the normal promotion exercise overturned.  Multiple reasons have been given to us as to why the promotion ceremony was changed:

1.       Student issues with the previous class

2.       Poor turnout

3.       Lack of parent involvement

Our response to these is:

1.       Why should these 8th grade students be punished for an act that was not their responsibility?

2.       What kind of turnout would you have by having the promotion during the day?  Parents work, grandparents work and/or live out of town.

3.       Lack of parent involvement?  We were never informed of the possible decision to do away with the promotion. The kids have activities all year long and attendance for those activities is always great.  (i.e. music programs…extra chairs being brought in and many in attendance still standing)

We the parents and kids of the 8th grade class should have been given the opportunity to voice our opinions on the choice of changing the way and day the 8th grade ceremony would be changing. Our kids already do not get treated fairly and feel like just one more thing is being taken away from them.  Do you really want to send one more negative message to these kids?  Do you want them to think that their hard work for good grades, that their school spirit, that their involvement in school activities is not worth the same promotion activities as those that have gone before them? Not just the kid’s involvement in school activities but also how this will affect the parent’s involvement in school activities. If parents and kids feel as though their feelings and voices don't matter anymore. If we feel all decisions and matters are left up to the principal and the school board and those of ours no longer matter where does that leave the moral for the students and parents of the school?
