Reject the Ja'afari Personal Status Law

We are opposed to the Government of Iraq's plan to introduce the Ja'afari Personal Status Law, which if passed by the Iraqi parliament, would legalise marriages for girls as young as nine years old. We are disgusted by this proposal from Iraq's Cabinet ministers, which will be voted on by the Iraqi parliament, after the April 2014 elections. We urge all political parties in Iraq's parliament, to reject the Ja'afari Personal Status Law and to further commit themselves to advancing Iraq's international obligations, to safeguarding the rights of all Iraqi children.
