Yvette Cabrera has worked as a columnist for the OC Register for more than a decade. She gave a voice to the voiceless on issues that mattered to the community - the homeless, trafficking victims, the developmentally disabled, immigrants and the working poor. She wasn't afraid to tackle difficult topics such as homophobia, and she humanized communities that are often marginalized.
The loss of Yvette's voice will be felt beyond the immigrant community and will deny these groups a voice in the county's newspaper of record. It also limits the awareness of the community at large about the issues facing their neighbors.
The economic situation is difficult and all newspapers are having a tough time, but leaving this void and eliminating this column that reflected the lives of such a large section of the community is not acceptable.
