Start Masconomet Regional School Later
This petition had 480 supporters
We respectfully request that the Masconomet Middle and High School change their start times to 8:30 AM or later.
With the support of overwhelming scientific research, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Massachusetts Medical Society recommend that teens start school no earlier than 8:30 AM. Schools that have met this standard nationwide are already enjoying the benefits of decreased rates of teen car accidents, substance abuse, obesity, depression, and anxiety – and better academic performance.
The Masconomet Regional School District could enjoy similar success. Since little progress has been made in mandating later school start times at the state level, and any such changes may take years to take effect, the Masconomet school community should begin to take action now. Such a change will require coordination among many stakeholders for scheduling academic, athletic, employment and childcare activities, all of which present logistical roadblocks that can be overcome. Acting sooner rather than later ensures that the health, well being, and success of our children remains of paramount importance.
By signing this petition, you are NOT endorsing any particular solution to this problem: all you are doing is asking the Masconomet School Committee to begin the process of investigating a later start time for the Masconomet Regional School.
