There is a local housing crisis:Around 1200 homeless cases are in temporary accommodation, including nearly 1,000 families, some placed in B & B for more than the 6 weeks legal maximum.
About half are sent out of borough, disrupting lives and schooling and the Council is now considering placing all homeless people out of borough.
Instead of using all vacant council homes to house them, H & F have closed their homeless hostels and are steadily auctioning off some vacant homes or selling estates to developers to demolish and build luxury flats.
Around 300 homes have been auctioned, netting in the region of £112 million, none of it used for low cost homes for rent as the administration believes that there is too much social housing stock (31% of the borough)
Amongst other schemes, 760 good quality council homes in 2 West Kensington estates are planned for demolition, together with the destruction of the much loved Earls Court Exhibition centre:
They are being replaced by luxury flats for overseas buyers selling at £ 600K plus for a 1 bed flat, far out of reach of local working people. Though most will be rehoused, thriving local communities will be destroyed & the vibrant social mix lost.
Since April 2013 only those resident for 5 years can apply for social housing, excluding others even if in desperate housing need. Homeless people in temporary accommodation are excluded if they have an ‘ongoing tenancy’.
This has cut the waiting list at a stroke but housing needs haven’t gone away.
THESE POLICIES ARE UNFAIR TO RESIDENTS IN HOUSING NEED
Please sign my petition asking the Council to stop auction sales, demolitions & cuts to social housing, which force residents out.
