Companion greyhounds are required by law to wear a muzzle in public in Western Australia. Greyhound muzzling laws are a Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL), which is based on the breed not on individual dog behaviour. There is no evidence to suggest that greyhounds as a breed pose any greater risk than other dog breeds.

Compulsory muzzling contributes to negative public perceptions about greyhounds and their suitability as pets, impacting adoption opportunities. In reality, greyhounds generally have friendly and gentle dispositions, despite their upbringing in the racing industry.

The RSPCA supports the removal of compulsory muzzling requirements for greyhounds as their policy states the use of muzzles should be based on the  behaviour of each individual dog, not the breed.

In addition to the RSPCA, the following organisations and Government offices also support an end to the BSL that requires greyhounds to be muzzled in public: Australian Veterinary Association, NSW Greyhound Industry Reform Panel, Greyhound Racing Victoria, and both the ACT and VIC Governments that have recently repealed the greyhound muzzling legislation.
