Knowing and understanding your breast density can be life-saving. Dense breasts are not abnormal, so why do they matter on a mammogram? Dense breast tissue shows as white/grey on a mammogram but, unfortunately, so do cancerous tumours. Trying to detect cancer in a dense breast is like looking for a ball of cotton wool in a snowstorm.  Additionally, breast density is a well-established risk factor for the development of breast cancer.  Whilst, mammography can be effective in fatty tissue breasts, in dense breasts it will miss up to 40% of breast cancers present.  These "missed" cancers may not be found until at a later, more advanced stage.

In America, 38 states, encompassing over 90% of American women, have passed laws requiring that women must be given some level of information about breast density after their mammograms.  A national "density" reporting standard is also under development so women living in ALL states receive density information. Equipped with knowledge about breast density, women can make informed decisions about their breast health.
