Anna Syed started this petition to prakash javedkar (Education Minister of India) and

I'm an Indian student in tenth grade. Languages are my favourite subjects because books and fiction are a great way to empathy and inclusion.

But the thing is that CBSE, India 2014 Literature Reader edition is not inclusive at all.

  • Elsie Brown is the only female author in the book. There are only two Indian writers in the book. The others all fit the Old-White Man literature category.
  • The textbook doesn't talk about any current social issues.
  • There are many Indian writers, people of color, Muslim writers, LGBTQPIA+ writers, feminists, writers who speak about diasblility  who could have been included in our books and weren't.
  • There are things that need to be opened for discussion. Textbooks are a great way to bring start those discussions.

I'd love to see our textbooks populated with more diverse and stronger female characters seeing them in something which so many students read would make me and people who are marginalised and discriminated against feel much much more validated.
