Petition to Société de transport de Montréal.

The climate crisis is getting more serious as years pass by. More extreme Food and water scarcity, increased flooding, and extreme heat are threats to humankind if we don’t take action right now. Our goal is to limit warming to around 1.5 °C by 2030. To achieve this goal, our greenhouse gas emission needs to be reduced 48% by 2080.

We, the undersigned students of John Abbott College, call upon the Société de transport de Montréal to reduce the number of gas-powered buses and increase the number of electronic buses. According to reports1, the transportation sector is the biggest greenhouse emitter in Quebec. The STM emitted a total of 158,000 tons of CO2 in 20152. 55% of overall emissions in Montreal are caused by transportation ). Decreasing the number of gas-powered buses will decrease the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. In Quebec, our electricity is generated through renewable hydro power. We can do this! The investment in electrical buses will also influence other transportation companies to do the same.
