Mental health awareness is on the rise with more and more people coming forward to seek help. This is incredible but we still have a long way to go. People need to be educated more on the issues that people deal with on a day to day basis. We want to highlight the difference between self harm and self injure so we know exactly how to help others when we find them in crisis. Self injury has a clear stigma around it. People are often referred to as attention seeking, this is not the case and if we all start by changing those two words around to seeking attention, not only does it sound better but it makes you ask why?! And this is where it starts.

It’s clear to see that self harming is happening frequently and all around us. Having personal experience myself of self injury I want to try to do more to support these individuals. Through my own experience it’s clear that there’s not enough support as people don’t understand to help.

I would like the government to introduce Safe Self-Harming boxes for people who use self-harming as a coping mechanism. In no way do I mean give people the implement to self-harm, these boxes would have cleaning products and dressings in them along with information about safe self-harm and a first aid leaflet along with other materials to help people help themselves to look for more healthy coping strategies. People need to start to realise that these self-harming behaviours are not the problem for the person using it, self-harming is the solution to the problem. So instead of trying to take away people's way of coping, we should be working with them on the underlined issues rather than focusing on the solution. We should be able to do this in a safe way and that's by educating the person on how to keep safe while using self-harm: to try and limit or avoid any long term damage but also working and supporting them on there coming to terms with the underlined issues.

I think we need to ask ourselves why the government can issue clean needles and even a safe space to addicts to inject themselves with potentially lethal substances but there’s nothing around to support individuals that experiencing mental health difficulties and using self harm as a way to cope.

The more people who feel able to seek help and feel comfortable discussing self harm will help lower the limits of those who go on to commit suicide.
Let’s change this, and help end the stigma!

Thanks
