Why this petition matters

Colorism is something many women deal with on a day-to-day basis, whether it's being called ugly, or too dark, to even being told they do not belong.  I feel that colorism is shown within the makeup industry because of brands constantly forgetting about the beautiful dark queens when it comes to shade ranges. Fenty Beauty set the bar real high when they released their 40-shade range foundation that benefitted the lightest of women to the darkest, but what about the other brands that are white-owned? Brands like it cosmetics, tarte, and glow and lovely never make shades dark enough, but will have many shades that benefit lighter skin women. These issues are the reason women of color never feel themselves and never feel included in something that should be diverse for all women. I come from a Puerto Rican family that is made up of mostly women and we are all different skin colors so it is unfair when me and my cousin go makeup shopping and she's constantly looking for a darker shade match and cannot find the right one. Theses are the steps I feel we should take to address the colorism in the makeup industry

  • Try to only support black owned makeup brands or indie brands, they are inclusive to darker skin women and are locally made.
  • Call out the brands that are colorist and stop supporting them.
  • Be kind to all women no matter their skin color, women should support each other no matter what because we are the ones who have to fight against injustice the most in all parts of our lives.
