- This petition calls the TTD to hire non-Hindus without bias, and allow them to exercise their constitutional right to freedom of religious expression.
- Additionally, TTD should educate the large number people they serve about secularism in India and everyone's right to enter a temple.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has a huge influence on people, as one of the most visited religious centers in the world. It administrates Hindu temples in India and around the world, and is involved in various social, literary and educational activities. An ongoing case in the Hyderabad High Court is regarding the show-cause notices issued by TTD to fire more than 40 non-Hindu employees, who do not hide their religion. Although the hearing was adjourned, and as a result they are not fired yet, it is time that TTD treats people equally, and respects their freedom of religion and expression. What's worse is that, being controlled by the government, TTD forgets the core ideal of secularism in India, when pressured by other Hindu organizations to snatch a person's job in the name of religion.
The issue is not that the Indian government steps in to administrate Hindu temples, because secularism in India means to treat every religion, including the nonexistence of one, equally. The issue is that non-Hindus are discriminated against and shunned in Hindu temple trusts. Publishing irrational news about non-Hindus having different beliefs and entering a Hindu temple, even as they have the constitutional right to do so, antagonizes them, worsens the tensions, and leads to the unjust pressure placed on TTD to fire them.
