Petition Calling on Tirgan Festival to Believe the Survivors & Stop Giving Predators a Platform.

In the last few weeks, we’ve witnessed many Iranian women talking about their horrifying experiences of sexual assault and harassment, and calling out their abusers on social media.

Inspired by the "Me Too" movement, many Iranian women have broken their silence and exposed their sexual abusers and experiences of rape and sexual harassment.

Among Iranian men accused of sexual harassment and assault are well-known artists and celebrities of the Iranian art and culture community, including Saeed Shanbehzadeh and Aydin Aghdashloo, both of whom are accused of sexual abuse, rape, and sexual misconduct.

Both Shanbehzadeh and Aghdashloo have been invited to the Tirgan Festival several times in the last few years, as performers and special guests. 

We, a group of artists, activists, academics, and members of the Iranian-Canadian community, demand from the board of directors of Tirgan Festival - Mehrdad Ariannejad, Azita Tayba, Nima Ahmadi, Ali Nakheizadeh, Mahsa Pajvaki, Ali Tofighi, Soheil Parsa, Maneli Jamal - to stop collaborating with, and inviting Aydin Aghdashloo, Saeed Shanbehzadeh, and Jian Ghomeshi to the Tirgan Festival.

We invite the Tirgan board of directors to issue a public statement, condemning sexual violence, rape, and sexual assault to avoid perpetuating a culture of silencing and victim-shaming. We invite the Tirgan board of directors to join us in supporting the survivors and making our public spaces and cultural venues safer. 

Unfortunately, in the past, Mehrdad Ariannejad, a member of the Tirgan board of directors, and the CEO of the Tirgan Festival has not only failed to take steps toward condemning sexual abuse and assault but has a history of supporting the sexual predators in our community.

Earlier this year, Roqe Global Media was incorporated as a for-profit business by Mehrdad Ariannejad, the CEO of Tirgan. Ariannejad and Ghomeshi serve as the directors of Roqe Media, which has been producing a podcast called Roqe, hosted by Ghomeshi.

Jian Ghomeshi was fired from CBC Radio in late 2014 after more than 20 women accused him of sexual abuse and sexual misconduct, and lost his social status in society as a result. Ghomeshi was rarely an active member of the Iranian-Canadian community before his disgrace. However, since his fall as a celebrity CBC host, Ghomeshi has shifted to find a place in Toronto’s Iranian-Canadian community using prominent members of the Iranian diaspora. Unfortunately, some Iranians, inside and outside Iran, knowingly or unknowingly, have participated in his podcast.

Mr. Ariannejad is also the Executive Director of the Arta Gallery in Toronto, a supporter of Aydin Aghdashloo, whose sexual harassment and abuses have been reported on social media and other online platforms over the past years, and with at least one survivor publicly coming forward in the past days.

The silence of Tirgan festival board members, some social activists and members of the Iranian-Canadian art and culture community, and some of the Iranian diaspora artists and figures who collaborate with Tirgan festival, has pushed us to express our strong concerns and opposition to this hypocritical and passive approach and to show our solidarity with the survivors.

We believe that the Tirgan Festival belongs to every one of us. It belongs to all who have volunteered at Tirgan during past years, to all artists who have participated and all those who supported the festival by attending it every year so that Tirgan can be more prosperous and successful.

Tirgan festival must stop collaborating, inviting, and supporting predators, and until Tirgan representative clearly express that they will do so, we will continue our awareness campaign through civil means supported and preserved under the Canadian law, such as boycotting the festival, informing the Canadian public in this regard, and asking Tirgan sponsors to reconsider their financial support for this festival.

To the Iranian-Canadian Community and the Iranian diaspora: Do not collaborate with and support abusers. Do not invite them to our cultural events. Do not keep silent about this. Silence is complicity with the abuser!

To the women who are survivors of abuse and assault by Jian Ghomeshi, Aydin Aghdashloo, and Saeed Shanbehzadeh: We believe you!

در روزها و هفته‌های گذشته، در شبکه‌های فارسی زبان شاهد روایت‌های متعددی از زنان بودیم که درمورد تجربه تلخشان از آزارهای جنسی نوشتند. این جریان که در ادامه جنبش "من هم همینطور" به وجود آمد، الهام‌بخش زنان ایرانی برای شکستن سکوت خود و افشای آزارهای جنسی شد.

در این میان، افرادی از اهالی فرهنگ و هنر، از جمله سعید شنبه‌زاده و آیدین آغداشلو هم مورد اتهام تعرض جنسی قرار گرفتند. شنبه‌زاده و آغداشلو در گذشته از جمله میهمانان ویژه برنامه‌های فستیوال تیرگان بوده‌اند.

ما، جمعی از هنرمندان، کنشگران، دانشگاهیان و اعضای جامعه ایرانیان کانادا، از هیات مدیره فستیوال تیرگان -مهرداد آریان‌نژاد، آزیتا طیبا، نیما احمدی، علی نخئی‌زاده، مهسا پژواکی، علی توفیقی، سهیل پارسا، مانلی جمال- تقاضا داریم از همکاری و دعوت آیدین آغداشلو، سعید شنبه‌زاده و ژیان قمیشی به فستیوال تیرگان خودداری کنند.

از آن‌ها دعوت میکنیم که بیانیه‌ای مبنی بر محکوم کردن خشونت و تجاوز جنسی و عدم حمایت متجاوزان و دلجویی از آزاردیدگان منتشر کنند. ما از هیات مدیره فستیوال تیرگان دعوت می‌کنیم در حمایت از آزاردیدگان و امن کردن بیش‌تر فضاهای جمعی به ما بپیوندند و خشونت جنسی را محکوم کنند.

متاسفانه درگذشته مهرداد آریان‌نژاد، از اعضای هیات مدیره و مدیر اجرایی فستیوال تیرگان، نه تنها قدمی در جهت محکوم کردن خشونت، آزار و تجاوز جنسی برنداشته، بلکه همواره از آزارگران حمایت کرده است. به عنوان مثال، آقای آریان‌نژاد در اوایل سال جاری میلادی، شرکت تولید رک گلوبال میدیا را به همراه ژیان قمیشی تاسیس کرده است که تولید کننده پادکستی به اسم رک و با اجرای ژیان قمیشی‌ست.

ژیان قمیشی در اواخر سال میلادی ۲۰۱۴ و پس از آنکه بیش از بیست زن او را متهم به خشونت و تعرض جنسی کردند، از CBC Radio اخراج شد و جایگاه اجتماعی خود را در جامعه کانادا از دست داد. در حالیکه وی پیش از دست دادن جایگاه اجتماعی خود در جامعه کانادایی هرگز در کامیونیتی ایرانی فعال نبوده، امسال با استفاده از پادکست رک به سراغ هنرمندان و ایرانیان مشهور در خارج از ایران رفته و از این طریق قصد دارد جایگاهی در جامعه ایرانی برای خود دست و پا کند. متاسفانه شماری از ایرانیان به‌‌نام ساکن داخل و خارج ایران، دانسته یا ندانسته در پادکست رک شرکت کرده و می‌کنند. 

آقای آریان‌‌نژاد همچنین مدیریت اجرایی گالری آرتا در تورنتو را بر عهده دارند که از حامیان آیدین آغداشلو است که در سال‌ها و روزهای گذشته روایت هایی از آزارگری جنسی ایشان در فضای مجازی عنوان شده‌است.

در این میان، سکوت فعالان اجتماعی و اهالی فرهنگ و هنر جامعه ایرانیان کانادا بهانه‌ای شد، تا ما به عنوان عضوی از این جامعه کوچک بر آن شویم تا نگرانی و مخالفت شدید خود را با این رویکرد ریاکارانه و منفعلانه ابراز و حمایت خود را از آزاردیدگان اعلام کنیم. 

ما معتقدیم که فستیوال تیرگان متعلق به تک تک ماست و متعلق به همه افرادی‌ست که در این سال‌ها بدون هیچ پرداخت مالی با تیرگان همکاری داوطلبانه کرده‌اند، همه هنرمندانی که در آن شرکت کرده‌اند، و همه افرادی که با حضور خود از این فستیوال حمایت مالی و معنوی کرده‌اند تا تیرگان هر دوره پررونق‌تر باشد.

بدیهی‌ست که در صورت عدم قطع همکاری و استمرار حمایت تیرگان از متجاوزان، ما فعالیت مدنی خود را از طریق راه‌های مدنی که قوانین کشور کانادا در اختیار ما گذاشته، نظیر بایکوت فستیوال وآگاه‌سازی جامعه کانادایی در این راستا، ادامه خواهیم داد و از حامیان مالی تیرگان تقاضای بررسی ادامه حمایت مالی خود از این فستیوال را خواهیم کرد.

خطاب به کامیونیتی ایرانیان کانادا:‌ با متجاوزان همکاری نکنید. آنها را به فضاهای عمومی ما دعوت نکنید. در این باره سکوت نکنید. سکوت همدستی با متجاوزان است.
