A few years ago, under pressure from the trans community, Tinder introduced the ability to indicate a non-binary gender identity on a user’s profile. But since then, trans users still experience unfair targeting and reporting because of their gender identity and often get banned from the app. 

While we understand that Tinder must take reports seriously, it is clear that the process and technology they use to moderate their platform unfairly targets trans and gender non-conforming individuals. This results in their profiles facing increased scrutiny by moderators and spam blockers. 

Tinder needs to do more to protect trans and gender non-conforming individuals on their app and put systems in place to discourage erroneous reporting of their profiles. 

Ultimately, Tinder’s do nothing position hurts not only the trans and gender non-conforming people who get unfairly targeted but also the many cis-gendered people who are open to meeting and connecting with trans individuals.

Tinder claims to value inclusivity, yet they continue to allow a bigoted minority to play gate keeper on their platform, creating an environment that upholds binary social norms rather than challenging them.
