Why this petition matters

Started by elgina smith

Bereavement is a pain in itself, and to be forced to rush against time .To plan ,bury, and process in a healthy way is impossible ,in a 3-7 day time frame. I feel if we are given months for maternity leave to give birth and recover from the child’s  arrival. We need equal or more time for mental health after the loss of a loved one. As a family that had a healthy son with no known health issue and to unexpectedly suffer the loss of his life to gun violence, we found ourselves broken and broke trying to come up quickly with the extra expenses of an unplanned death. We also needed the time off to debrief and plan out our own family's path through this painful new normal. I believe if given a longer window of paid time off .We could have been in a better mental state when we were termed to return to work . Noticing that every other crisis or trauma that's work related, has additional time off with benefits for therapy on or off site support. Why not grief? In reality we even get more paid days off in a year for holidays to celebrate history marked occasions than we get support for mourning the life of our loved ones, whose life mattered so much to our family .
