Nicola Houlding started this petition to Mansfield District Council (Mansfield District Council)

Trams improve the image of large towns and cities and contribute to economic regeneration. A new tram is a visible, permanent way of showing that an area is being invested in for the future. It attracts businesses and tourists, and helps people access jobs and services.

We celebrated when new tram lines were opened in Nottingham in the summer of 2015.

This tramline network already extends as far as Hucknall. To see it extended further into Mansfield town centre - picking up the likes of Newstead Abbey, Kirkby and Sutton along the way - cleanly and conveniently connecting us all with eachother and with Notts City centre would materialise fantastic, long-term benefits to our communities. This work would also create many skilled and unskilled jobs within our local communities - both during build and implementation phases, and after.

With such an initial connection in place, focus and planning could then be applied over following years to creating a tram hub within/around Mansfield connecting urban areas (Berry Hill, Forst Town etc.) as well as heritage and tourist sites such as Sherwood Forest, Centre Parcs, Sherwood Pines, etc as well as places of learning and work such as our local colleges and industrial estates.

Below are some facts about trams from bettertransport.org.uk:

-Trams are very popular. They encourage people to leave their cars behind. At least 22 million car journeys a year no longer happen in the UK because of trams.
-Trams reduce congestion in city centres by providing people with a quick, reliable, high-quality alternative to the car. They can reduce road traffic by up to 14%.
-Trams can help us tackle climate change. Travelling by car produces over three times as much CO2 as travelling by tram, according to Defra.
-Trams make cities nicer places to be. They improve local air quality because they run on electricity so don’t produce any pollution at the point of use. They are very quiet and safe.
