Keep concealed carry laws out of UofL

Currently, House Bill 249 threatens the safety of our campus by introducing legislation that calls for concealed carry laws to be implemented at the University of Louisville. Becoming a concealed carry campus would jeopardize the safety of the students, faculty, and staff at the University of Louisville. We feel that the presence of firearms would threaten our personal safety as well as our ability to cultivate our minds while attending this institution. Preventing HB 249 from passing is key to ensuring a healthy learning and living environment for everyone. No student, faculty. or staff member should have to navigate the university in fear of violence or second guessing what could happen should someone abuse their second amendment right as a result of the increased presence of firearms. By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with those who do not want to live in fear at this institution of higher learning. The open carry rally that is happening around campus on Friday is a reflection of what this campus is facing through this legislation. We must not allow students to feel as if they cannot walk around this campus due to the threat of confronting someone with a firearm. We must not allow weapons to be introduced into our classrooms, dining halls, and dorms. We must not allow this legislation to pass.
