Why this petition matters

Started by Philip Trayhorn
  • Brownstone 'Permanent Coastal Artillery Defence Battery' South Devon became operational in 1942 defending the River Dart Estuary and Start Bay against enemy attack until wars end in 1945. The 'Battery' officially closed in 1956. What remains is now under the ownership of the National Trust. The 'WW2 military' approach road begins at Froward Point National Trust Car Park and enters the 'Battery' passing the Daymark Tower at the bottom of the hill. Over recent months the WW2 concrete fence posts together with  wire tension ratchets, have been removed and replaced by wooden posts and barb wire. A section of concrete posts remains along the road just past the Daymark Tower. The National Trust are willing  to consider retaining the remaining WW2 concrete posts insitu and placing the new wooden posted fence behind the original wartime posts. Keeping this last section will continue to give the visitor a glimpse into the past imagining perhaps Royal Artillery gunners marching down the road to 'man the guns'. If we gain enough support history will be preserved. Sign the Petition. Thanks.
