Emily Phuong Tran started this petition to Tigard-Tualatin School Board

Hi, my name is Emily Phuong Tran, and I’m asking you to sign my petition to get free period products in Tigard-Tualatin middle schools and high schools.

Period products should be treated as a health necessity, just like toilet paper and soap. Right now the only way for a student to get period products in school is to go to the nurses office. That’s very inconvenient. It makes more sense to have period product dispensers in the bathroom and students only have to walk outside their stall to get whatever they need.

Some people are lucky enough that they only run out of pads and tampons a couple times during the school year, but for students who can’t afford them, they would have to go to the Nurses Office 5-7 times a month to get the products they need.

I have friends who have gone home when they get their periods just because they would rather go home than go to the Nurses Office. We shouldn’t have people missing class for something they can’t control.

Access to period products mean access to education. Students will come to school if they have the pads and tampons they need.

Portland Public Schools already have free period products dispensers installed at their 7 high schools. They piloted the project in the 2017-2018 school year at Grant High School and officially passed the legislation for all their high schools in 2018-2019. This same law has been passed for Scotland and in the states of California, Illinois, New Hampshire and New York. That shows that this idea is absolutely possible to implement. For Tigard Tualatin to do the same would be a step in improving student success.

Thank you.
