City of Thunder Bay - Declare a Climate Emergency!
This petition made change with 760 supporters!
On January 13, 2020, EarthCare's Climate Adaptation Working Group will be asking City Council to declare a climate emergency for the purposes of naming, framing, and deepening our commitment to protecting livelihoods, ecosystems, and our community from climate change. To quote youth climate activist Greta Thunberg, "climate change is not a future problem". Climate change is a global problem, but the impacts are experienced on a local level, and impacts across Northwestern Ontario will increase. Immediate action is needed.
While the City has begun taking important steps towards climate action, such as developing and implementing the Sustainability Plan and the Climate Adaptation Plan, the purpose of a symbolic declaration of a climate emergency is fourfold:
- Sends a message to other levels of government that the climate crisis warrants serious attention and urgent action;
- Encourages all municipal decisions to be made through a strong climate action lens;
- Increases municipal commitment to setting ambitious climate goals; and
- Builds citizen awareness of the climate crisis and support for climate action.
Let's join the other 1,200+ jurisdictions worldwide (including 83 municipalities/governments in Canada!) in declaring a climate emergency - sign this petition to show your support!
