TRUSU Pride Club started this petition to Thompson Rivers University and

As of right now, 2sLGBTQ+ students do not have a safe place to gather. For events, the TRUSU Pride club has to try to find a new gathering space outside of regular university hours to have their events. To find resources, the students must work on their own to seek resources to help them in their journey. When feeling isolated and judged, 2sLGBTQ+ students have to rely on services that may not be sensitive or understanding about 2sLGBTQ+ struggles. Additionally, many international students have experienced hate, discrimination, and/or judgement because of their 2sLGBTQ+ identity and have not been allowed to be themselves before becoming a TRU student. Therefore, they may not know they can express themselves and be accepted in Kamloops and the TRU community.

Having our own designated pride center on campus will give a safe place for 2sLGBTQ+ students where they can access resources, assistance, and understanding without fear of judgement or hate. We can create opportunity for specified help at TRU for 2sLGBTQ+ students who may be struggling. Additionally, 2sLGBTQ+ events could be held at the pride center, meaning there will always be a place to celebrate and have consistent social outlets, such as Queer Connections or pride events. The pride center would be a welcoming environment where students can find their sense of belonging and start their journey of self-discovery for local and international students. We hope you consider the outstanding benefits to having a pride center at TRU and look forward to your support. Thank you for your time.
