Iqbal Bedi started this petition to Thomas Tunnock Ltd and

Tunnock's use stereotypical Indian accents in radio adverts on Smooth FM. This is not humour - it is racist. It has no place in the UK and this advert must be banned.

Smooth Radio features an advert by Tunnocks where a character talks about his experience when biting into a Caramel Wafer buscuit. The character uses an exaggerated and stereotypical Indian accent which has no connection to the company nor to the product. This advert plays on racial prejudice and must be banned.

Jokes about Indian accents have prevailed in British society for many years and justified as light-hearted banter - this is no longer tolerable - this is 2021.

Having lived in the UK all my life, I consider this my home. I enjoy the British sense of humour; I enjoy the sarcasm, the self-effacing and self-deprecating nature of British humour. However, there is nothing light-hearted nor funny about making fun of someone’s accent because of their nationality or race.

Language is a powerful medium through which unconscious bias and prejudice against certain nationalities is reinforced. These jokes about Indian accents alienate people and make them more isolated  than ever.

The mockery of the Indian accents is repulsive and implies unconscious racial bias. This is not acceptable. This advert must be removed.
