Postpone UConn 2020 Commencement Ceremonies

Due to the global pandemic of COVID-19, normal operations at colleges and universities worldwide have been disrupted in the best interests of health and safety. This has been the case at the University of Connecticut, where all remaining Spring semester classes have been moved online.

Additionally, it was announced on March 17th that May commencement exercises have been cancelled.

Our hearts are with everyone affected by this pandemic, and we thank all those who are working around the clock to contain its effects. We understand the CDC’s guidelines and the importance of limiting the gathering of groups during this time.

When it becomes safe to do so, the Class of 2020 deserves to be properly recognized for our achievements. Many of us have worked several years towards our degrees and may only have this one opportunity to walk at a college graduation.

Therefore, we request that UConn’s commencement ceremonies be postponed, not cancelled, to a date later in the summer when experts deem the dangers of this pandemic have subsided. In the event that this is not the case by the end of the summer, we request arrangements be made for commencement exercises later in the fall.

It is important that we support each other in this difficult time. Above all, be kind.

Thank you for your consideration.
