The continual rise in gun violence in our country is totally unacceptable. Mass murders like those of 6 and 7 year-olds left riddled with multiple wounds from assault weapons is not by any stretch of anyone's imagination what the 2nd amendment is about. The full text of the amendment reads: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." The framers of the constitution were dealing with much simpler firearms, wanted the people to have their guns for when they were called up into the militia and could never have imagined the type of automatic weapons that are available today, nor what they are being used for. It is time for the gun manufacturers and their paid mouthpiece, the NRA, to step up and support sensible gun control and gun safety. (Note: the NRA was active in gun regulation and gun safety throughout its history until the 70's.) However, it will only be financial pressure that might convince arms manufacturers to do the right thing. NY State is already leading the nascent movement of divestment which could be as effective as a similar movement to stop apartheid in South Africa, and we are grateful to Comptroller DiNapoli and the Retirement Fund for sellling all stock in Smith and Wesson and freezing further purchase of firearm stock. Now it is time to complete this divestment by selling the 45,325 shares of Sturm Ruger valued at $2.2 million
