The environmental and ecological impact and cost of maintaining a golf course are obvious. It takes no genius to know the incredible amounts of water and chemicals, be it fertilisers or pesticides, required to maintain acres of lush green grass under the sweltering Indian sun. As if this weren’t bad enough, new golf courses are built in ecologically crucial areas: across elephant corridors in Kaziranga, after razing down 4000 trees in a national park in Srinagar, or destroying mangroves in Mumbai. As long as golf remains a prestigious and aspirational sport, there will be no end in sight to this extremely wasteful display of inequitable access to resources. My petition is a pledge, to stop playing golf, and attempt to transform the prestige associated with the pursuit into social shame instead. Sign, share, and discuss with every golfer you know alternative pursuits that could offer them the same satisfaction: bird watching, perhaps, instead of birdies, or swimming, a great activity for both the young and the elderly at a minuscule fraction of the cost it takes to golf.
