Petitioning Prime Minister, Leader of the Conservative Party Theresa May and 3 others

We deserve a debate - What's May scared of?

When Theresa May called a snap General Election she said:

"Let us tomorrow vote for an election, let us put forward our plans for Brexit and our alternative programmes for government and then let the people decide."

Within hours of her announcement Downing Street confirmed Theresa May would not appear in any head-to-head televised debates during the election campaign.

We believe the UK public deserves better and that party leader’s plans should be put under serious scrutiny.

We demand a televised debate between Theresa May and the leaders of the UK's main opposition parties. If Theresa May refuses, the BBC, Channel 4 or ITV should host a debate with an empty chair for the Prime Minister.

As an A-level politics teacher, I always impress on my students the importance of open debate in any democracy. It's time Theresa May got that message too.
