Save your local High Street

This petition asks Theresa May to make the Business Rate system fair so that large companies pay a similar proportion of their income as that demanded of small businesses.
Small retailers have been struggling for many years and successive governments have increased their burdens. For many, the increase in rates from April 2017 will be the last straw. Count the number of empty shops in your local town centre or High Street and expect this to increase in the next couple of years. What impact will this have on you, your family and neighbours?
Our Fair Trade and organic shop in a market town has had a rates increase of 45% since Mar 2016. This represents 1.8% of our turnover! Our turnover has not increased in this time. We have only been able to stay in business because we have a fair landlord who recognised the pressure we are under and did not increase our rent at the last review. Many small businesses are seeing much higher rate increases than this!
The government claims to support small businesses because they raised the profit level at which corporation tax kicks in. The independent retailers that I know struggle to pay themselves a living wage for all the hours they work. Having to pay Corporation Tax is a distant dream.
We need a Business Rate System based on Turnover, not premises. We are competing against web businesses who are only paying the much lower rates demanded for warehousing. If we continue to make assessments based on floor area, then the charge per square metre should not be lower for larger companies.
If you want vibrant local high streets full of independent businesses, that are a pleasure to visit, then join us in asking Theresa May to rethink the changes to the business rating system and make it fairer for small businesses.
