5 May: 6 years in Evin prison! How much more before Iran will #FreeGrandpaKamal?
May 4, 2017 — Friday 5 May is the 6 year anniversary since my 77 year old dad (Grandpa) Kamal was taken to Evin prison – 72 months, 2,193 days. It feels like a lifetime.
We still remember May 2011 like it was yesterday: the shock and confusion we all faced. I was trying to get in touch with Dad to tell him we’d won tickets in the ballot for Wimbledon tennis. I tried emailing/calling and for the first time ever he didn’t reply. No one in Iran wanted to explain to us what was going on.
We never did get told by officials what had happened. It took us several terrifying weeks to confirm Dad was still alive. Of course, it was so much worse for Dad.
We're often asked: how long is left on Dad's sentence? Not so easy to answer.
In 2013 we were told Dad had an 8 year sentence - 7 for alleged "espionage". We were also told that prisoners who behave are released early, half sentence (which would have been May 2015) or earlier.
In early 2016 we were told that the full sentence was 7 years. That takes us to 5 May 2018. So 1 year left?
The problem is the lack of reliability in information from Iran. Dad’s been eligible for release every day since January 2014 (over 1,200 days), we keep getting told he’s about to be released, and no one can explain what’s going on, why he’s still there.
So how long before Dad comes out of prison? Who knows, it could be tomorrow, it could be never.
Your love, support and kind messages mean so much to our family. Thank you.
