Training for emergency services staff on special needs such as autism

Last week there was a serious incident involving myself and my autistic 8 year old son. It resulted in me almost having a head on collision with an oncoming car and the police were called to assist in the calming down of my son who was in full scale meltdown attacking me. The police were completely clueless as to what to do to help. They restrained my disabled, vulnerable son against the car with his hands up behind his shoulder blades in the same way they would if they were dealing with a criminal. It was very clear to me they did not know how to deal with special needs and had to ask members of my sons school (who also came to assist) on what to do with him. It was an extremely upsetting experience for my son and myself. I am campaigning to raise awareness and get people to realise that the training of the emergency staff on how to deal with additional needs such as autism, as well as mental health issues should be mandatory.
