Theresa May, take part in TV debates prior to the general election
0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!
Theresa May has asserted that she will not be a part of any televised debates with other party leaders during the run up to the general election in 2017. This is not acceptable.
It is not a surprising move however, as David Cameron tried to wriggle out of facing his opposition in a similar fashion in 2015, ultimately without success.
For many, TV debates are one of the most of the important sources of information during the campaign, and they have proved influential in other elections. At a time when there is widespread disaffection with politics, we must do whatever possible to make discussion accessible to people and broadcasting leaders' debates on major networks is an important way of doing this.
If Theresa May refuses to take part in any televised debates, major broadcasters should let them go ahead without her, so that the British people may still have the right to hear from those candidates who do respect them.
