The prime minister announced today that she would not be holding televised leadership debates for the 2017 general election. These debates have played a vital role in helping voters understand the issues facing our country and what policies each party promotes. Debates were held in 2010, 2015 and again in 2016 for the EU referendum. A televised debate should not be for the Prime Minister to dictate. If the Prime Minister does not decide to take part, then the broadcasters BBC, ITV and SKY have a duty to hold the debates regardless and leave a blank podium where the Prime Minister refuses to stand. A general election decides the direction of our country for the next 5 years. These debates must go ahead.
