Racism Out Of The Local Elections

Recently a leaflet was distributed by the Conservative Party in Romford warning that if residents didn't vote Conservative, Romford would "increasingly look like an inner city area", a "London crime wave" would take place and that Havering would resemble "boroughs like Hackney, Newham, Camden and Barking rather than a traditional parts of Essex".

It also contained several warnings about the area being "ruled by Mayor Khan".

As well as being a racially charged attack on Sadiq Khan, this leaflet is a racist slur against the diverse communities of Hackney, Newham, Camden and Barking.

Without using the same explicit language, the leaflet uses precisely the same scare tactics of the General Election of 1964, when the Tory Party distributed leaflets stating "If you require a coloured for a neighbour, vote Labour, if you are already burdoned with one, vote Tory".

These racist, dog whistle tactics should have no place in the local elections.

Nor should any pledge to create a "Hostile environment for immigrants", or to blame migration for the effects of austerity, as Theresa May has on several occasions.

We, the undersigned demand Theresa May and Conservative Campaign Headquarters issue a statement condemning this leaflet, apologising for using racist and anti-migrant rhetoric, and stating what action will be taken against local parties that use racism to win votes.
