The harrowing story of the Rochdale child abuse scandal has been examined in a recent BBC One drama called Three Girls, which explores the shocking exploitation suffered by young girls, and how sexual health support worker Sara Rowbotham worked relentlessly to get justice for the victims. When the grooming ring’s existence was made public in 2012, people around the UK were horrified – particularly when it emerged authorities had missed several chances to rescue the victims.
Sara Rowbotham was instrumental in uncovering the web of abuse, realising something large was happening, and alerting authorities, although they ignored her at first. She was a sexual health aid worker and Rochdale’s crisis intervention team coordinator, who worked directly with the victims of abuse in the community, gaining their trust at her refuge centre, and gradually piecing together what had happened to them, which led her to recognise an alarming pattern of abuse in the area. If it hadn't been for Sara, half the evidence that led to mass convictions would never have come to light!
and what happened when they had what they needed? Did they reward her? Did they give her a good job? No they made her redundant!
Im calling for you to give her a honour to officially thank her for what she did! Award her with a MBE and use her skills and knowledge, make her an advisor for child safeguarding! We owe her for what she did!
