Make any trade deal with America conditional on their support for equality & human rights
Donald Trump has just been elected as president of America. Many people have concerns about the views he has expressed during his campaign. These have included racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic comments and the promotion of sexual violence against women. These are not views any of us want to support.
There has been talk in the media about the UK forming a preferential trade deal with the US. We should not put short-term economic gain above the basic rights of our fellow human beings. The UK should stay on the right side of history and follow Merkel's lead in making any co-operation with the US conditional on their supporting “values of democracy, freedom, and respect for the law and the dignity of man, independent of origin, skin colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political views”.
