Lowering the voting age to 16

We are a group of Year 10s raising awareness about giving 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote.
We believe that giving 16 and 17 year olds this responsibility would impact the UK as a whole because the younger voters add new ideas to the political process. Most people have the same view on politics for the rest of their lives. From our research, we concluded that if 16 and 17 year olds were given the right to vote in the EU referendum it would have added 1.4 million voters which would have been enough to sway the country's result to the UK remaining in the EU. We have been doing research on the reoccurring argument that 16 year olds don’t have an interest in politics and found that it is inaccurate. In fact, in the Scottish Independence referendum more 16 – 17 year olds voted than 18 – 24 year olds and 25 – 34 year olds proving that this statement is false. 16 year olds should be able to vote on their futures as they are in one of the groups that is going to be impacted most by the decision. At the age of 16 you are given certain opportunities such as joining the army, getting married and pay taxes with parental permission as well as working. So if young people are contributing to the economy of the country, why aren't they allowed to decide who is in charge of it? By lowering the voting age to 16, you are not only giving these young people a legal human right, but you are extending the opinions that are able to be voiced and allowing them to participate in the country’s political views. How can they be expected to gain responsibility and become adults if they cannot be trusted to voice their views on the country.
By signing this petition you will be helping us and many others throughout the UK to voice this issue to the government.
