Lauren Pilkington-Smith was a 10 year old girl from Leigh , Lancashire.
On the 7th July 2005 , after a normal day at school whilst playing out with friends , a neighbour she knew took advantage of their friendship and tragically murdered our beautiful little girl. The judge noted that he had taken away a "gem of a girl ".
Lauren sustained over 100 injuries after Kieron Smith attacked her in a fit of rage. As a family we couldn't say our goodbyes properly as the injuries sustained resulted in a closed coffin.
Her body was discovered by a family member not far from where she lived after a painful 8 hour search by family and friends and the community of Leigh.
Smith was then arrested for her murder , days after his family joined us on the search for Lauren. He denied murder claiming he was at home watching television. During the two week trial ,Smith showed no remorse and was smiling throughout the hearing. It only took the jury a few hours to reach a unanimous verdict of guilty. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but due to his age (17) he could only serve the maximum of 15 years.
In 2014 his family applied for parole for shorter sentencing and it was rejected. His parents claimed that Smith had a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome but tests showed that this was false . The judge noted that Smith "wished to have it, but clearly tests showed no indication of any sort".
Kieron Smith is due to apply for parole in July 2020.
As a family we continue to live our lives day by day and the thought of him being released makes us feel that we could not live our lives the same again.
Please help us by signing this petition to make sure that Kieron Smith does NOT reach his parole date.
