The purpose of this policy initiative is to create a positive approach to menstruation and the menstrual cycle that empowers women and men and supports the effectiveness and wellbeing of the workplace environment. To restore the menstrual cycle as the asset it is.
It’s not just about taking time off if you feel unwell but about empowering people to be their optimum selves. If you work with your natural rhythms, your creativity and intelligence is more fulfilled. And that’s got to be good for all forms of work environments.
Having awareness about the menstrual cycle helps both men and women become more productive at work. The reality many women face, at least at some point in their lifetime is finding extreme difficulty in working when on their menstrual cycle.
Our menstrual cycle can impacts us in many ways, it can limit our productivity due to how extreme the symptoms can be. And given, that it can be rare for some women however the unfortunate and harsh reality is that menstrual pain and feelings of fatigue can limit how active we are during that time and pushes us to suffer as a result of our menstrual cycle not being a valid enough excuse for sick leave. Many of us women are left voiceless and disregarded, there are women who are left in absolute agony at work but cannot take time due to fear of potentially being dismissed from employment. Some women even have to leave job positions due to them not being able to cope with the pressure of attending work when going through extreme and reoccurring symptoms.
I made this petition to raise awareness and demand a policy be put in place that enables us women as a whole to have the option of taking menstrual leave whether paid or unpaid. To be understanding of all circumstances. No amount of pay check can make a woman who faces agony during her menstrual cycle feel positive about the situation she's facing. When all they'd wish for is to be at home, resting. We need to be more understanding of how much of an impact menstruating can have on women and need to be much more sensitive towards the circumstances many women face and can relate to. It would make many women feel more positive at work, knowing that they're able to take menstrual leave if it's needed without having to face the fear of potentially being labelled as a liability and unreliable.
We want our voices to be heard, loud and clearly. That this is unfair. We need to be very understanding. If someone is in pain – no matter what kind – they are encouraged to go home. But we need a policy in place which recognises and allows women to take time for their body’s natural cycle without putting this under the label of illness. And recognise that many employers do not classify women that are menstruating regardless of their circumstance as unwell.
We need to stand together in unity and recognise common circumstances amongst menstruating women and how it impacts their productivity and wellbeing. I believe that if enough people support this campaign, it is Theresa May's responsibility to introduce a Menstrual Leave Policy under employment for option to take paid or unpaid leave.
