Let’s stop chucking old contact lenses in the bin, they can be recycled!

Went to pick up a trial run of daily contact lenses today and, as a thought, asked the optician what to do with them once I’ve worn them. “Bin them” was the reply. So I said, so the millions of people in the uk who wear dailies just bin them? “Yes. Just try not to think about it!” Not good enough methinks. So, Googled this and found that there’s an initiative in the USA to capture and recycle both the lenses and the packaging, which is even highlighted by the AOP association of optometrists, but the only UK alternative costs £66 for a small collection box. Now these little beauties can easily go down the loo, in the bin etc and find their way to the sea or landfill in much the same way as packaging and bags can. I think we need to do something different than just binning them. Maybe the opticians can provide containers that lens users can take away and have replaced when full ?
