As a midwife i understand the skill that goes into using a doppler and also understand how untrained users could mistake other noises for the baby's heart beat! They give false reassurance when mothers should be going with their gut instincts and seeking professional assesment when they feel something isn't right!

As a midwife sadly I’m aware of women who have had false reassurance and gone on to loose their baby

As an anxious mum I would have welcomed this piece of equipment and probably bought it but as a nurse I am aware of the dangers of a false sense of security and with high risk pregnancies I preferred to share this with the highly qualified professionals who were caring for me and my babies and trust their judgement.

Important issues yet another way to self medicate? Because Doctors are so stretched? Population Explosion? People need to have a Walk in Service! Not enough Doctors? So it is Help Time. 

As a sonographer i am aware of women who ignore signs that their baby is not doing well all because they listened with a home doppler and heard a heartbeat. As a qualified sonographer with a lot of experience in obstetrics i would not use a doppler as i am not trained so why should women with no medical background be able to buy these products.

I'm signing because as a midwife I was always very concerned when my mother's told me that they had purchased a home Doppler. It takes great expertise to interpret a fetal heart rate. A lay person would not understand what a fetal heart sounds like when a baby is distressed. A person having a heart attack wouldn't check their pulse and think everything was alright. I believe home dopplars give false reassurance she should be banned from sale.
