'We will make Britain a country that works not for the privileged few, but for every one of us. That will be the mission of the government I lead.' Theresa May - first statement as Prime Minister, 13 July 2016
Our NHS is in crisis.
Three out of four hospitals are failing, say CQC inspectors. Their biggest concern? Safety. Of the 98 hospitals rated so far, 74 required improvement or were ranked inadequate.
3.4 million patients are languishing on NHS waiting lists - the highest number since 2008. Over 6000 people had to wait at least 1 year for treatment or operations, some waiting as long as 3 years, despite the NHS' publicised waiting time of 18 weeks.
The proposed Junior Doctor's contract caused doctors to strike for the first time since 1975 - because they were outraged that you felt that it was OK for demoralised and exhausted doctors to work extra shifts, putting patients' lives at risk and removing enhanced pay for weekend working. Some doctors already work 90 hours in 8 days without a break, and all of them are working regular unpaid overtime to alleviate patients' suffering.
Every single NHS patient should be entitled to:
- Sufficient hydration
- High quality nutrition to sustain healing and recovery
- Discreet toileting and washing facilities, supported where necessary
- Night time conditions conducive to a minimum of 6 hours sleep, undisturbed by routine hospital/staff noise and activities
- Emotional support and a felt sense of security and care
- Continuity of care and relationships (i.e. not being moved from ward to ward for administrative convenience)
- A wait of no longer than 28 days for significant procedures
Theresa May, will you show the electorate that you really mean what you said in your first statement as Prime Minister? Demonstrate that you stand not with the privileged few, but with every one of us. Please pledge now that you will not use private healthcare yourself, as one of the privileged few, until the NHS is functioning properly, able to provide standards of care that every one of us is entitled to, according to the list above.
