Invasive aquatic plants are taking over Florida's waterways, lakes, ponds, and springs. They affect hunting, fishing, the flow of water, the water we drink, recreational water activities, and can impact us financially. As a state that relies heavily on the industry of tourism, these silent invaders can can dramatically impact our economy.
Current removal procedures are working, but these plants are out of control. The problem is that these plants grow at such a fast rate, they are not able to identify the problem until it is a critical emergency or a crisis. At this point it is difficult and expensive to manage. If citizens were more aware and knowledgeable, they could support Florida Wildlife and Game Commission in identifying problems before they become critical.
To solve this problem, we would like the state to be required to post signs at public lakes, ponds, rivers, and springs. These signs would assist in the identification of invasive plants, proper disposal of invasive plants, ways to stop the spreading of plants, and how to report a problem. This could drastically impact the spread of invasive plants.
If we don't take action, our beautiful lakes, ponds, rivers, and springs will be covered in invasive plants.
