Restore our School Librarian and Library!

In the summer of 2016, Chicago Public Schools laid off 1,000 teachers and staff. Among those who were laid off, was our only school librarian, Ms. Licciardi. Roosevelt High School has joined the decreasing group of school librarians, where there is only 157 left. Only 1 in 4 schools has a certified school librarian supporting their students, and only 2 historically African American schools in Chicago still have a school librarian. We must restore our school librarian and library as it plays a vital role in our education and school.
Without a school librarian, who will help our kids analyze diverse sources of information, think critically, explore new ideas, and make decisions?
Without a school librarian, who will help our students cross the digital divide and safely navigate new technology and the Internet?
When CPS schools have a school librarian, the library is not just a room. It is a place with a teaching partner who supports students’ intellectual curiosity, helps them explore their interests without judgment, and embrace learning as a life skill, not just an academic necessity.
When CPS schools have a librarian, all faculty and staff benefit. School librarians support the classroom curriculum, teacher training, and educator effectives.
Ms. Licciardi, wasn't just a school librarian. She was a teacher. She was a mentor. A support system. Any student you ask, will tell you that she knew what was your favorite book or a book you might be interested in. She regularly volunteered with RHS Book Club. She encourages students to read to build their Reading and English skills. She created a safe and fun environment in our school. Taking away our library and librarian, will only hurt our school, our education, and our students.
Please ensure that RHS students are taught the important information skills and personal growth they need by signing this petition for bringing back our school librarian and library . #CPSlibrarians4all
