Why this petition matters

Community of Alliance ext 10 in Benoni are against foreign nation's shops operating within their complex/estate. Each and every complex/estate has its own rules and policies to protect the interest of the community through specific measures based on the majority of the residents. It has been discussed in the previous meetings that the community cannot allow any foreign nation to run their business of tuck shops within our community because they are known for selling unhealthy expired food. If people buy expired perishable foods they could be making themselves and their children sick and lacking in the nutrients needed. It should be seen as a violation of the people's right to food because people should have a right to healthy foods. It is stated in the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in General Comment No. 12 that the States have "the obligation to fulfill (facilitate) means the State must pro-actively engage in activities intended to strengthen people's access to and utilization of resources and means to ensure their livelihood, including food security" which means they are required to ensure people have the right to have food and food security. Food security should include having food that is edible, not expired, and healthy. The other reason is to promote our own business and support each other before allowing any outside business to operate within our premises.
