The Yale Corporation: Commit to transparency and democracy in the presidential search process

For the first time in twenty years, Yale will have a new university president.  Despite the fact that the president makes vital decisions about the course and identity of the institution, and the fact that undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students are the largest and most visible constituency of the Yale community, we have been denied any formal representation in the presidential search process.

In order that the process better reflect the values of democracy and transparency that are at the core of this institution’s mission, we as Yale students demand that:

1. The minutes of each of the Presidential Search Committee meetings be accessible to the public.

2. A student representative be present at each of these meetings.

3. The candidates be announced a minimum of three weeks before the final selection is made in order to allow for meaningful public discourse about the decision.

We urge the Yale Corporation and the presidential search committee to enact these demands.
