I am likely way too late, but this is a fantastic idea. Lovecraft was a pretty wretched human being. Not that I'm in any danger of winning one, but I wouldn't feel particularly thrilled to be awarded with a statue of Lovecraft.

I'm signing because we can do better than Lovecraft as a symbol for speculative fiction.

A bust of the brilliant, visionary Octavia Butler is far more worthy and culturally relevant honor than Lovecraft's legacy of racist attitudes and frankly mediocre craft. Please update your award!

The figurehead that represents a genre of writing should stand for positive and uplifting themes in literature, not fear and bigotry.

Yay!!! Lovecraft is exactly what Mr. Older says he is. Just sooooo tired of him. and Ms. Butler is a humanistic, wide-thinking, brilliant author who has compassion for everyone! thanks for this!

We need to move forward. I listen to people of color who talk about the hurt this statue causes. HPL wrote about people of color as less than human. That is horrible.

Butler changed the way I think about the world, and her work helped me survive as a teenager and, today, as an adult.

There's nothing fantastic about Lovecraft's grotesque racism, it shouldn't be used to represent fantasy.

This is important to me not only because Butler is a vastly superior writer, but because Lovecraft's racism and sexism permeated everything he wrote: his fantasies were those of the bigoted and intolerant, while Butler's works explored the dystopian and utopian possibilities of worlds forced to confront injustice and intolerance of all kinds.
