Stop the Harassment of the Rev Borah Lim!

The Rev Borah Lim (photo from the Newsnjoy news service) is a pastor of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK). She has worked tirelessly to promote the rights of sexual minorities in South Korea. She has now been investigated by another denomination, the conservative General Conference of Presbyterian Churches in Korea (GAPCK), for heresy, due to her advocacy for sexual minorities and for her efforts in helping to publish a Korean translation of the Queer Bible Commentary.
The GAPCK has no authority to oversee the Rev Lim's ministerial work, let alone investigate her for doctrinal error. Besides, issues concerning sexuality and gender identity are not core doctrines to the Christian faith, and many Christians can respectfully disagree on them. The GAPCK is simply using church process to harass the Rev Lim and bring discord within the Christian community, both in Korea and internationally. Pressure must be brought upon the GAPCK to cease this action, as it is fractious, and runs against the spirit of the Christian Gospel.
The Rev Lim must be left free to do her ministry and advocacy work without harassment. Therefore, we, the undersigned, call upon the World Communion of Reformed Churches to admonish the GAPCK for taking this action, which goes against the reconciling love of God in Jesus the Christ, and which is damaging the reputation of the Christian church in South Korea.
- The World Communion of Reformed Churches
We who have signed this peition call upon you, the General Secretariat of the World Communion of Reformed Churches to use your influence, through your relationships with member denominations within South Korea, and through them, with other denominations in South Korea, who have put the Rev Borah Lim, a pastor of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK), which is a member denomination of the WCRC, through an investigation for heresy, when they clearly have no authority, disciplinary or pastoral, to do so.
I remind you of Article IV (Values), Section B, of the WCRC Constitution, which clearly states:
'The World Communion of Reformed Churches in its order
and actions is called to respect, defend, and advance the
dignity of every person. In Jesus Christ all human
differences must lose their power to divide. No one shall be
disadvantaged for, among other reasons, race, ethnicity, or
gender, and no individual or church may claim or exercise
dominance over another.'
The denominations which have undertaken this action, regardless of their standing with the WCRC, are clearly violating this principle.
It is my and our prayer that you exert influence wherever you can so that this harassment may end, and a more rational discussion on issues of faith and the status of sexual minorities can take place.
