Currently, the United States is one of four countries, and the only developed country, that does not have a federal mandate to provide paid parental leave to its citizens. On a federal level, the only policy currently in place is the U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act, which ensures job protection for 12 weeks to care for family members. While this is beneficial because it applies to both parents, regardless of gender, it continues to be unpaid, and therefore unrealistic for many U.S. families. Parental bonding with newborn children is vital to the lifelong health of our nation’s children. Studies of programs from around the globe indicate paid leave programs  improve the health of new mothers, increase the rate of women returning to the workforce after having a child, and reduce family reliance on federal aid programs.
