War Orphans' Right to Aid

The Iraq and Afghanistan war orphans are not provided basic aid, according to Iraqi TV, The Guardian and CNN, see video above.

There are 4.5 million war orphans in Iraq alone, according to MIT, see sources below. Many make a living from collecting scrap from the dumps, which the White House has ordered the troops to dump 11 million pound contaminated scrap in. The population struggles with increasing health problems, not least cancer and birth defects, and lack supply and equipment for treatment. Sex trafficking has also become a large and increasing problem since the invasion.

Article 50, Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons, chapter 7, obligates the coalition to ensure "registration (...) maintenance and education (...) of children who are orphaned or separated from their parents as a result of the war” until the country's institutions are able to care for the children. CNN reports in above video that Iraq's institutions are 'in shambles'. MIT draws the same conclusion in below overview of facts and figures on Iraq.

Article 24 obligates the coalition to ensure that orphans are moved to a safe country. Articles 55, 56, and 59 obligates the coalition to provide basic necessities for the other victims. Article 60 states that the obligations in article 50 can't be waived for any reason or period of time.

The vast majority in the coalition countries' populations are unaware of the problem and legal obligation, and the issue needs to be addressed continually till solved.

Thank you for signing and sharing.
