"Go Go!": Once known as the epitome of DC music, it is now known as the clamors of people wanting the rise of affluent transplants to leave their city's culture alone. For the span of decades and two cities, the Redskins had culturally appropriated the Native American culture by glorifying the derogatory term of "redskins". In the span of the decades that the now Washington Football Team had their former name, there were also clamors of it to be removed. After an arduous process, their name was finally revoked. Alas, the ownership of DC's football team has yet to rename their franchise. As the introduction mentioned, DC's contemporary problem is gentrification. To put things into perspective, a study from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) identified "more than 1,000 neighborhoods in 935 cities and towns where gentrification occurred between 2000 and 2013." From those numbers, D.C. had the highest percentage of gentrifying neighborhoods in the country. Gentrification is not only a problem in itself, but also intertwines with other problems such as food deserts and voter ID laws. While gentrification has allowed for more stores like Wal-Mart and Targets to open up, there has been a lack of grocery stores in poverty struck areas of Washington, DC. Despite this major problem, the national news tends to focus on politics when it brings up Washington, DC. For the American audience, one of the few things that garners higher attention that politics is American football. For this reason, I believe that Dan Snyder should officially rename his franchise to the Washington Gentrifiers. In doing so, this would not be the only time that a Washington sports team has a name that is related to a problem in the city. Before being renamed to the Washington Wizards, DC's basketball team was formerly known as the Washington Bullets. Then-owner Abe Pollin changed the name in 1997 due to the violent undertone that the team's name brought, especially during the height of gun violence in the city during the 1990's. However, contemporary society has become more liberal and thus, has not been afraid to face topics that affect the modern day. In conclusion, I would like to start a petition to name said football team to the Washington Gentrifiers as a way for Dan Snyder to gain good PR from the public while also bringing attention to the ongoing crisis in DC.
